We’ve been told that trust is the bottleneck for enterprise AI. Surveys point to executives losing confidence, thought leaders warn of a “trust gap,” and vendors scramble to pitch “trustworthy AI” as the next product category. But maybe trust isn’t the problem. Or at least, maybe the kind of trust we’ve been told to cultivate isn’t what matters.
What if this so-called erosion of trust is a sign of maturity? The industry is moving beyond the initial, uncritical acceptance of vendor promises and is grasping the complex realities of deploying AI into core business operations. In that light, less “trust” may be exactly what the market needs.
Recent data from the Capgemini Research Institute shows that executive confidence in fully autonomous AI agents dropped from 43% to 27%. In isolation, this suggests a market in retreat. In reality, it signals the decline of hype and the rise of pragmatic adoption.
Executives are no longer passive recipients of vendor narratives centered on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and full autonomy. Instead, they are developing hands-on experience with technology, leading to a more realistic perspective on its limitations. The decline in “trust” reflects not failure, but a correction of inflated expectations.
The deeper organizations get into implementation, the more pragmatic confidence they report. Organizations that have moved beyond exploration and are in the implementation phase report significantly higher levels of trust in AI agents. Among this experienced cohort, 47% express an above-average level of trust, compared to only 37% of those still in the exploratory phase.
The erosion of trust is aimed squarely at the high-risk, unproven concept of full autonomy. At the same time, confidence is growing in tangible, supervised enterprise AI applications.
Organizations are learning to distinguish between speculative “Level 5” autonomy and the measurable value of human-in-the-loop systems. Trust is being rebuilt, but on a foundation of competence, architecture, and governance rather than aspiration.
That shift favors teams that invest in foundations: data pipelines that are monitored, enterprise AI platforms that enforce guardrails, enterprise AI software that integrates with existing controls, and governance that actually runs. Buyers are getting savvier, too. They’re selecting vendors who can play well with others, not ones who pitch a monolith and promise to replace everything by next quarter.
This is why frameworks and assessments are suddenly relevant. The AI maturity conversation has operational teeth. Leaders are mapping themselves against the Gartner AI maturity model or an internal AI maturity framework. They’re running an AI maturity assessment not to collect badges, but to figure out where the weak joints are and how to move up AI maturity levels without breaking production.
The maturation of AI isn’t neat. It shows up as paradoxes — contradictions that reveal where the market is moving, and where it’s stuck. Each paradox captures a tension enterprises must navigate.
Adoption is at an all-time high — 79% of enterprises report using AI agents. Yet trust in full autonomy is falling. The paradox isn’t hard to explain – experience has exposed fragility:

The real market for enterprise AI software lies in augmentation, not replacement. Human-in-the-loop systems (Level 2) are where adoption is happening.
